NEW ARIZONA GUN LAWS
2009-10-05

On 30 September the Supreme Court agreed to hear a gun case called McDonald v Chicago. It will decide whether the 2nd Amendment applies to gun laws enacted by state and local governments. There should be a decision by next June on this important issue. We encourage gun owners interested in case details to track its progress via David Hardy's "OF ARMS AND THE LAW" website which is referenced in our Links Section.

Also on 30 September, nine new Arizona gun laws went into effect. An overview of three laws that impact most gun-owners is presented below. Many people helped in crafting the laws and in the lobbying effort that insured they were signed into law. One of the key organizations responsible for the statutes is the ARIZONA CITIZENS DEFENSE LEAGUE (AzCDL). It's a lobbying group that works hard to restore and strengthen gun rights. We strongly recommend that Arizona gun owners join AzCDL. See the Links Section for their address.

Defensive Display - This law clarifies and codifies the defensive display of a firearm, such as:

Parking Lot Vehicle Firearm Storage - The law prevents any private or public employer, property owner, etc., from banning any person from keeping a firearm in a locked vehicle in a parking area on the property, with specific limited exceptions.

Restaurant Carry - This law provides that CCW permit holders may carry concealed handguns in establishments that serve alcohol providing there is no signage prohibiting firearms and the person carrying the firearm does not consume alcohol.
